Wimbledon 2019, Final Preview: Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic

Will the Legend add to his legacy or will the Djoker inch closer?
Will the Legend add to his legacy or will the Djoker inch closer?

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have become a constant at The Championships final as at least one out of the two have reached the final every year barring 2 since 2003. Thus, it does not come as a surprise that Novak will be gunning for his 5th title at the Wimbledon while arguably the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) will be eyeing an unprecedented 9th title!!

Interestingly, the road to the finals for the top 2 seeds was quite similar having dropped only two sets en route to the ultimate match. Both of them had to conquer a Spanish rival in the semis, which they won in 4 sets.

It is also interesting to note that Wimbledon is always seen as a tournament where players with a big serve flourish, take Kevin Anderson for example, however, here are the two players who are nowhere near the top 5 in terms of serving statistics but are the top 2 when it comes to winning the 1st serve receiving points.

Head to Head

The two have played 47 times against each other with the World No. 1, Novak Djokovic having a slight advantage over the Swiss Maestro with a head to head record of 25-22. Also, the two have played each other twice at the lawns of the Championship, where Djokovic leads 2-1.

Djokovic will definitely be the favorite in the final having won the pair’s last 4 matches (8 out of the last 10), but even with this record he will be wary of the legendary Roger Federer who will be gunning to be the Oldest man in the open era to win a grand slam at the age of 37 years and 340 days.

What the players said

The world No. 1 promised to give his 100% on the field having dreamt of being in this position as a child and he said –

It’s the final of Wimbledon. This is the kind of match that I always dreamed of being part of as a young boy with the tennis racquet. This is what I worked for. I wanted to be in this position, and I have a chance to fight for a trophy. Regardless of who’s across the net or what is happening, I’ll definitely give it my all.

However, his opponent in the final, the one who is considered to be the GOAT by many, Roger Federer had an advice for the school kids as he told the press –

I think the moment you’ve played somebody more than 15 times, there’s not that much more left out there. You know where the players go when it really matters. I don’t think there’s much I need to do in terms of practice. This is like school: You’re not going to read lots of books on the day of the test. You don’t have the time. It’s quite clear the work was done way before.

Prediction: It will be hard to predict the winner of this high-octane encounter, but Djokovic’s fitness levels might just lead him to victory over the Swiss legend in 4 sets.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
